It drew on research being conducted within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dur.ac.uk\/english.studies\/\">Department of English Studies<\/a> at Durham University, as part of an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ahrc.ac.uk\">AHRC<\/a>-funded project called <a href=\"https:\/\/reed-ne.webspace.durham.ac.uk\/\">Records of Early English Drama North East<\/a>. This forms part of a massive international project to assemble a complete survey of medieval and early modern performance in Britain.\u00a0<em>The Sacred and the Profane<\/em>\u00a0was inspired by various influences from this period, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The legends of <a href=\"http:\/\/community.dur.ac.uk\/theatrum.mundi\/index.php\/historical-background\/worms-serpents-and-stage-dragons\/\">North East dragons and worms<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The tradition of <a href=\"http:\/\/community.dur.ac.uk\/theatrum.mundi\/index.php\/historical-background\/the-boy-bishop\/\">boy bishops<\/a> processing to Durham Cathedral<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/community.dur.ac.uk\/theatrum.mundi\/index.php\/historical-background\/dance-at-a-renaissance-court\/\">Dance in Renaissance courts<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/community.dur.ac.uk\/theatrum.mundi\/index.php\/historical-background\/the-danse-macabre\/\">The danse macabre<\/a>, or dance of death<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Theatrum Mundi festival &#8211; and in particular The Sacred and the Profane\u00a0show &#8211;\u00a0celebrated the dramatic traditions of the North East.
